Artist's Comments

this piece is black paper cut to form the image of a parakeet in some branches laid atop some hand-made paper with marbled green and gold dyes.

not my typical pencil drawing, but something i enjoyed doing anyhow.

sorry if the image seems a little spotty, it was scanned through glass

well i just used what i had available - x-acto #11. standard size knife leftover from all those graphic design courses in college. the cut paper is 9x12 black "artagain" sheets from either canson or strathmore, i forget which. no scalpels for me :P

:) i've argued that.
try a scalpel if you can purchase one. in my eyes much more suitable, because the tip of the blade is rounded, which allows to follow curves easier. if you buy one seek for "swann morton". use only #4 stainless steel handles and equip them with those blades which are best for your needs (i use blades #20 and #23). see this page from swann-morton.

If the cut outs were on there own, it would look as if the parakeet were sitting on branches out in the open air. But the effect of the green dyes give the impression of the perspective being inside a cavernous area within a bush with light shining through the leaves from outside.

Brilliant work as usual. :gallery:

~ dissident intellectual. ^_^

wow, thanks for the info.

you know, it's sort of scary how similar x-acto knives are to surgical knives. though not as industrial, they come close enough for a striking resemblance. i have seen x-acto blades that look like your #20 blades, so maybe i'll give them a shot. if that doesn't work out, i've got swann-morton bookmarked.

thanks again :)
